THE HISTORY OF SPANISH: AN ADVENTUROUS LANGUAGE - NOVEMBER 10TH

El origen de la Lengua Española se pierde en la noche de los tiempos. Comienza en algún momento imposible de establecer, hace más de 2.000 años, con una decisión administrativa de algún burócrata del Imperio Romano: todos los súbditos del Imperio habrán de hablar en latín. En su charla, Juan Manuel Espinosa (Profesor de Español en el Instituto de Tecnología de Sligo) explicará como a partir de ese momento, y como si se tratara del guion de una película de aventuras, la Lengua Española se ha ido cincelando a base de invasiones, pactos, reconquistas, guerras, tratados de paz, matrimonios, divorcios, amores, desamores, viajes a lo desconocido y un sinfín de peripecias. Todo ello, sumado al lenguaje como instinto del Ser Humano, nos ha dado, muchos siglos después, una lengua estructuralmente sencilla, compacta y sutil, que sirve de lengua común en todo el planeta a 550 millones de personas. FILM: RELATOS SALVAJES (WILD TALES), THURSDAY, JUNE 8TH

This Thursday, June 8th, we are pleased to present Oscar nominated Argentinian film, Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales). The film will be shown at 8pm in the Yeats Building, Sligo.  Relatos Salvajes is in fact six different stories, united by a theme of frustration and vengeance. The Guardian described the film as "This delicious, chocolate box of nasty, untamed tales about revenge," and "a fantastically scabrous collection of movie tales from the dark heart of Argentina." Admission is €5 (€3 for students and the unemployed), and includes wine, tapas and sangria after the movie. 

DISCOVER MALLORCA, WITH FELIP CARBONELL AND NÚRIA AGUILO

We are pleased to present an evening of Mallorcan food, music, dance and culture, with Felip Carbonell and Núria Aguilo. The event takes place in the Yeats Building, Sligo, on Friday, February 17th at 8pm. Felip Carbonell has been a Sligo resident for almost two decades now, and for most of that time he has been a central part of the Sligo music scene, though his roots are in Mallorca where he was born and grew up. Núria Aguilo is an English teacher from Mallorca, and is spending a year out from her job to enjoy living in her second favourite place - Ireland. She enjoys both Irish and Mallorcan traditional music, and also does Mallorcan dance. Felip and Núria will give us an introduction to their vibrant, fascinating island through its music, dance, food and history. Admission is €5 (€3 for students or the unemployed), and this includes wine and tapas
